SDU

Discontinuation of education programmes

SDU’s efforts to balance the economy means that a number of education programmes at two of the University’s faculties will be discontinued.

The University’s financial adjustment of DKK 95M from 1 January 2024 will be distributed differently between the faculties and the Central Administration. The adjustment means that the Rector of SDU, on the recommendation of the deans of the respective faculties, has decided that a number of programmes will be discontinued at the Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Business and Social Sciences in 2024. These are programmes that are no longer financially sustainable due to too few students. SDU’s campuses in Odense, Kolding, Esbjerg and Sønderborg will thus be affected by the discontinuation of programmes.

Students on the programmes concerned may complete their programme of study

The last admission to these programmes will therefore be in the summer of 2023. For some Master’s degree programmes, their final student intake will happen later due to the legal rights of undergraduate students. Students on programmes with a final enrolment in 2023 have the opportunity to complete their studies, and undergraduates will have the opportunity to proceed to a Master’s degree programme after completing their undergraduate programme. In the near future, the two faculties will inform students and staff about the specific plans for the individual programmes. Students enrolled in the affected programmes will also regularly receive direct information and the opportunity to ask questions about their course of study.

Departmental changes

On the recommendation of the Dean, the Rector of SDU has also decided that as of 1 January 2024, a new Department of Business Economics will be established at the Faculty of Business and Social Sciences by merging the current Department of Sociology, Environmental and Business Economics and the Department of Entrepreneurship and Relationship Management. The merger is to ensure a robust economy and improved framework conditions for business economics programmes and research with continued regional anchorage. Furthermore, it has been decided that as of 1 January 2024, the Danish Centre for Rural Research will be moved from the Department of Sociology, Environmental and Business Economics to the Department of Political Science and Public Management at the Faculty of Business and Social Sciences. This is done in order to ensure a sustainable economy.

New strategic basis

On a more general level, there is no doubt that the conditions under which SDU operates are changing rapidly these years. SDU therefore initiated a process earlier this year to renew the University’s current strategic basis in order to match the framework conditions the University is subject to. This applies not least to the uncertainty about the student intake in the new few years and thus potentially declining educational revenue.
