Here you will find the general requirements for you to be an active student. They cover both your first year and when you must complete the programme. There is also a requirement that you pass exams every year.
You have 1 year to pass you First-Year Examination
Within the first year of study you must pass the exams in the First-Year Examination to continue your studies. If you do not pass the First-Year Examination within the deadline, you will be notified that you will be withdrawn from your programme.
If you fail subjects from the First-Year Examination
It is important that you focus on passing the First-year Examination within the deadline. If you fail courses that are part of the First-Year Examination, you must make sure to sign up for the exams again. It is your responsibility to sign up for reexaminations.
Read more about how to register for the re-exam here.
Some of the courses in the First-Year Examination are on the 1. semester. Others are on the 2. semester. You have 3 examination attempts to pass the First-Year Examination courses on the 1. semester, but only 2 attempts to pass the First-Year Examination courses on the 2. semester.
Courses in the First-Year Examination | Number of attempts | First examination | 2.examination | 3. examination |
1. semester (autumn courses) | 3 | December or january | February | June |
2. semester (spring courses) | 2 | May or june | August | - |
The exam periods stated is only guiding. Always make sure to keep up to date on the specific examination dates in the exam schedule and on SDU's digital platform.
If things do not go according to plan
You can apply for an exemption to postpone the deadline for completing the First-Year Examination. An exemption may be granted only if you are able to document that due to exceptional circumstances, it has been impossible for you to complete the First-Year Examination within the deadline.
Make an individual study plan
Before you apply for an exemption you need create an overview of when you expect to pass the First-Year Examination. You can do that by making an individual study plan.
Have you been delayed on your programme? Check the rules on study activity and the time limit for completing the programme.
Time limit for passing your education
There is a limit to how long you may take to complete your studies:
- in the Bachelor’s programme you may spend 1 additional year beyond the standard period of study (stipulated time), to complete your programme.
- in the Master’s programme you may spend an additional 6 months beyond the standard period of study (stipulated time), to complete your programme.
You can organise your studies to use the extra time yourself. This does not require an exemption. It may be a good idea to create an individual study plan.
Active Enrolment Requirement: Pass at least one exam per year
You must pass at least one exam per year. This means that you, after your first year of study, at any given point in time must have passed at least one exam in the preceding year. If you have not, you will be withdrawn from your programme. The Study Start Test does not count as a passed exam.
If things do not go according to plan
If, due to exceptional circumstances, you are not able to meet the Active Enrollment Requirements or complete your programme within the maximum period of study, you may apply for exemption from the rule/rules.
SU and study activity
The rules on this page are the university's rules. These are the requirements for you to be enrolled as a student with us. SU also has a number of requirements you must fulfil in order to receive SU. They are not the same requirements. Also check out SU's rules if you are delayed in your study programme.
