Update on oak processionary moths at SDU

The infamous oak processionary moth is not affecting teaching or freshers’ events. However, the University of Southern Denmark continues to urge everyone to remain vigilant and to contact Technical Services should they spot the caterpillar.

SDU is continuing its efforts to manage oak processionary moths on the university’s premises, following their discovery in July.

The oak processionary moth is a moth whose caterpillars may be covered in tiny stinging hairs. These hairs can cause skin irritation, itching, rashes and irritation of the eyes and respiratory tract in humans. Although the caterpillars are now in the process of pupating or have emerged as moths, stinging hairs may still be found in old nests and in the area around infested oak trees.

The campus can be used as normal

Teaching, freshers’ activities and other events will go ahead as planned. There is no general recommendation to avoid using outdoor areas.

However, everyone is urged not to linger under oak trees and to respect any signage. If an area is cordoned off, it is because the presence of larvae or nests has been confirmed or is suspected.

SDU is stepping up its efforts

To be able to respond quickly to new discoveries, SDU has invested in its own pest control equipment. This means that the university is not dependent on the capacity of external suppliers but can initiate control measures as soon as new caterpillar nests are detected. This also applies in the spring, when any new eggs and caterpillars can be dealt with quickly and effectively.

The investment also strengthens SDU’s work on sustainable operations. The equipment uses hot water rather than chemicals and, in addition to controlling oak processionary moths, can also be used for weed control. In this way, SDU gains a solution that is effective, flexible and environmentally friendly.
