Special examination conditions

The need for special examination conditions can be due to long-term or temporary circumstances. Special examination conditions can be many different things, e.g.

  • extended time for the exam
  • shielding
  • aids, such as programs, headsets or scanner pens.

The purpose of special exam conditions is to put you on an equal footing with your fellow students, so you can complete the exam on equal terms.

Special examination conditions do not change the academic level or the competence objectives of the course. Therefore, your application may be rejected, even if you have a documented physical or mental disability.

You can apply for special examination conditions for a single exam, for a shorter period (e.g. a semester) or for your entire period of study. Please note that you must apply again if you change your study programme – also from bachelor's to master's programme.

Apply for an exemption for special examination conditions

You can apply the Study Board for an exemption for special examination conditions. The Study Board will assess whether you are entitled to special examination conditions and whether what you are applying for is possible. As a general rule, the special examination conditions will not change the form of exam.

Make sure to send your application well in advance of the exam for which you need the exemption. Otherwise, it may not be possible to provide the special examination conditions you are applying for.

Documentation

You must attach relevant documentation when you apply for special examination conditions, such as an SPS statement on support needs, a dyslexia test or a doctor’s certificate.

You must also explain why your disability means that you have a need for special examination conditions.

Apply on time

You must submit your application in time for the university to consider the special exam conditions in the planning of the exams:

  • no later than 30 March for dispensations regarding summer exams
  • bo later thsn 30 October for dispensations regarding winter exams

If you submit your application or any necessary documentation after these deadlines, it may not be practically possible to ensure the requested special examination conditions. In such cases, your application will be rejected, even if you otherwise meet the criteria for special exam conditions.

Inform about dispensation

If you have been granted special examination conditions, you must inform the relevant degree programme secretary that you will make use of the special examination conditions for an exam you are registered for. If you inform the degree programme secretary later than 10 working days before the exam starts, it cannot be guaranteed that you can make use of the special examination conditions. If other deadlines are stated in your decision letter, these apply. Generally, we recommend that you inform the degree programme secretary as soon as possible after you have received your dispensation decision.

If you have a dispensation for special furniture that requires a “furniture remover”, you must notify Technical Services at eksamensvagt@sdu.dk no later than 8 days before the exam starts.

The start of an exam is considered the first examination day in an exam period. For longer exams, the start is considered the day when the exam assignment or problem statement is distributed. Contact information and deadlines will be stated in your decision letter

Bring the decision letter to the exam

If you have been granted a dispensation for special examination conditions, you must bring the decision letter from the study board when you go to the exam. Please inform the exam invigilators or the examiner about your dispensation when you are making use special examination conditions at an exam.
