Danish exam culture

Critical thinking and freedom of speech are core values in the Danish education system. Rather than simply accumulating and reproducing knowledge, you are encouraged to analyse, question and discuss the course curriculum, both in the classroom and in the exam.

The active participation from classroom discussions, group work, presentations, projects etc. will prepare you for the exam situation where you are expected to take responsibility and control and contribute independent observations, analyses and perspectives.

If your are nervous or confused, try talking to your fellow Danish students, your lecturers or reach out to Counselling and Study Support - they can share their experiences, answer your questions and help you prepare for your exams.

In some courses, it may be possible to hold a mock exam to familiarise you with the exam format. Talk to your lecturer about the options for your particular course.

Analyse, argue and evaluate

Critical thinking and problem solving are important academic values in Denmark, and you are expected to not only present and apply theory to the exam case, but also to use the theory of the course to analyse and evaluate the exam case - and maybe even create new insights, products, solutions etc.

Often, you will find that there is not just one correct answer – so the argumentation you use to support your answer is often equally important. Remember to always cite your sources and make sure that it is clear what you are referencing from others and what you have produced yourself.

Read SDU Library's guide for citations and references.

Read the course description to familiarise yourself with the specific academic requirements for the course.

Grades are final

If you have passed your exam, your grade is final. You cannot reject your grade or do the exam again to improve your grade.

In some cases, you can contact the lecturer for feedback or an explanation, if you find the grade unfair. You can lodge an appeal if you feel you have been treated or assessed unfairly in an exam.

Read the rules for examination appeals.
