Step 3. What you can

On this site, you can read about the experiences of former students from your study in regard to their qualifications and how they use them in the job market.

The list is by no means exhaustive – there are plenty of students who have used their education to learn many other things and who have created a future that no one could have seen coming.  But remember, the list is never ending.

Doing your study preparation, exam assignments and other study activities it can be difficult to find out, which competences all your hard work gives you.

A Master in English Studies is an intense learning process in which you learn to:

  • convey professional issues and solutions to both professionals and non-specialists
  • translate between English and Danish, considering the linguistic correctness, style and situation
  • analyse different complex language and text forms
  • make aesthetic and communicative assessments
  • introduce contents in a manner that is customized to the target groups and with the involvement of the appropriate media
  • initiate and carry out professional and interdisciplinary cooperation and assume professional responsibility

Perhaps you are now thinking that you are developing more skills and other exciting competences, which is very good because you’re the expert who can continue the ”list” during your studies?

What will you work as when you’ve finished your education? This question has probably been given to you in numerous occasions without you knowing what to answer. It may also be a question you ask yourself. If you'd like some inspiration for an answer, it's good you're reading this. You have many possibilities with your competences.

You will be able to have a job or a career where you are going to:

  • work journalistically and editorially with television, radio or journals
  • convey text or questions accurate and short, possibly as a copywriter at a publishing company
  • enter projects about communication and marketing at advertising agencies and in private or public companies
  • act as an adviser or a consultant in different organizations, for example in the field of culture, communication or education
  • apply your knowledge of intercultural issues within the English-speaking countries and their relations to Denmark, for example in the field of service and tourism or ministries and embassies
  • teach at upper secondary schools or folk schools

Traditionally, the MA in English Studies is aimed at teaching and research, but examples of graduates in other job areas are many. You can apply for a job on radio / TV, at publishing companies, advertising agencies and private or public companies.

Would you like to continue into research?
You can continue your immersion in the English Studies and become a researcher in English language, literature, culture, communication and media. With a master’s degree in English Studies you can continue into the PhD-programme at the University or in a partnership with a private or public organisation.

With a master’s degree in English Studies you will gain professional competence to teach English in the upper secondary school. Most of those who are offered a permanent job as upper secondary school teachers have the qualifications to teach two subjects.

The upper secondary school career is perhaps the best-known and eye-catching career path. But it is not necessarily easier to get jobs in the upper secondary schools than in other industries. Also in this field, you must possess the right profile, professionally and personally, to be an attractive candidate.

You should therefore work purposefully with your profile if you dream of being a job at an upper secondary school.

You can also teach at another educational institution
The upper secondary school can be a natural pathway to walk along with a master’s degree in English, but if you dream about teaching, do not shut your eyes on the even bigger labor market that is constituted by all the other educational institutions.

With a master’s degree from the university you can also teach:

  • University Colleges
  • Folk schools
  • Academies
  • Technical college
  • and in the private sector, ex. language schools, course activities, consulting firms and the like

It is up to the individual employer to decide if you are professionally competent to teach at their school or firm.

Several times during your studies, you may doubt what you’re doing - and if you have chosen correctly. Although doubts can be uncomfortable, doubts are a chance to think about what choices you have doing your studies. The options can help to tune your profile in the direction you think is exciting and makes sense in your career plans.

Perhaps you think it might be exciting to work in an international relief organisation, at an advertising agency, an embassy or something else entirely, but you don’t know if you have what it takes. Luckily you have a chance to figure it out during your studies.

It may be that you find it exciting to try a work placement/company-based internship and / or try studying abroad to get to know another culture, test your competences and discover new possibilities.

Or maybe you are considering trying a student job in which you can get the opportunity to solve tasks where you make use of some of your competences from your studies and discover new career opportunities that you didn’t know would be an opportunity for someone with your skills.

These and many other activities are the kind of possibilities that can help you profile yourself and shed new light on your career opportunities.
