Rules for supervised written exams

You must arrive one hour before the start of the exam to prepare your computer for the exam. Remember your power supply and an extension cord (minimum 3 metres). You have to set up your computer yourself and make sure it works. Installation of IT equipment in the room must be completed no later than 15 minutes before the start of the exam. 

When to Arrive at Your Exam Venue on Engineering Programmes

The doors to the exam room close 15 minutes before the exam begins. The exact time is specified in the regulations for each exam. By that time, you must be seated to receive information about the exam. If you arrive late, you will not be allowed into the exam room, and you will use an exam attempt.

Quite exceptionally, the exam supervisor may allow you to enter the exam room even if you are late. However, you will not be granted extra time.

Before the exam, you must launch Exam Monitor and show the exam invigilator that Exam Monitor is running on your computer. Exam Monitor must run on your computer throughout the exam. If you do not connect Exam Monitor, or if you close it before you have submitted your paper, it may be considered an attempt at cheating in the exam. 

It is your own responsibility that you have the necessary IT skills to be able to complete the exam. You must therefore: 

• be able to use the programmes that will be used in the exam. 
• be able to compile all parts of the exam paper into one document (for instance by transferring data, tables from Excel or handwritten graphs and calculations from a digital scanner/pen to your exam paper). 
• save in PDF format, which is the format in which you must submit (unless otherwise stated in the course description, itslearning or the Digital Exam system).  
• know how to turn off synchronisation with internet-based file sharing services. 

You are responsible for your own IT equipment. Your computer must be able to connect to the University’s wireless network. 

Before the exam, you must make sure that the programs you are going to use, including Exam Monitor, work on your computer. Technical questions can be directed to the exam invigilator, who can call the IT support.

Mobile phones, digital watches/smartwatches, headsets, in-ear headphones and music players may not be used during the exam. For written exams on campus, mobile phones must be turned off and placed visibly on the table. Everything else must stay in your bag.

You are not allowed to use tablets and similar digital equipment that cannot run Exam Monitor, unless otherwise stated in the rules for the individual exam.

Permitted Aids for Written Exams in Engineering Programmes

The allowed aids for each written exam under supervision are specified in itslearning and the Digital Eksamen system:

• All aids allowed
  For on-campus written exams where all aids are permitted, you may use any aids except those specified above. This includes the internet, your own notes, textbooks, etc.
• All aids allowed, except the internet
  For on-campus written exams where all aids are allowed except the internet, you may use any aids except the internet and those specified above. This means you cannot access itslearning during the exam. Therefore, remember to download relevant documents from itslearning before the exam.
• Limited aids allowed
  The specific aids that are permitted will be clearly indicated.
• No aids allowed
  For on-campus written exams where no aids are allowed, you may not use any aids.

You may only bring and use one computer and one screen for the exam (the total number of screens may not exceed one), unless otherwise stated  in the course description or you have an exemption to do so. 

The maximum screen size allowed is 17 inches.

It is not permitted to: 

• share equipment. 
• borrow aids from each other. 
• use a virtual computer. 
• exchange files with others. 
• communicate with others, neither inside nor outside the examination room. Any use of social media is considered cheating in the exam. Make sure these services/programmes are completely shut down during the exam.

The exam assignment is made available digitally unless otherwise stated in the course description or in the Digital Exam system/itslearning. 

During written exams on campus, it is not permitted to leave the exam room during the first half hour and the last half hour of the exam time. If you leave the exam early, you are not allowed to take your computer, mobile phone, exam paper or other things out of the room. You can pick them up when the exam is over. 

Exam invigilators are present at written exams on campus. They observe the exam and you contact them by raising your hand. You may only leave the exam room with an exam invigilator. You are not allowed to exchange information or be in contact with others outside the exam room. When using the bathroom, you must use the one designated by the exam invigilator. Visits to the canteen or smoking breaks or the like are not permitted.  

The lecturer/examiner can only be called if the wording of the exam assignment is unclear or if there are errors in the exam assignment. The lecturer/examiner cannot be called because you are not sure about whether you have understood the assignment or to get help to solve the assignment. 

You are responsible for ensuring that your IT equipment is in order and for continuously saving your exam paper on your computer. If you have lost data because you forgot to save your exam paper, the exam will continue as scheduled without any additional time and you will use an exam attempt.

SDU cannot guarantee that we can solve problems on your own computer but we will of course try to help you as well as we can. If you are prevented from completing your exam paper on your own computer, you can borrow a spare computer from SDU. Only a limited number of spare computers are available. 

You must submit your exam paper as one document, unless otherwise stated in the course description. You must therefore digitise any handwritten graphs, formulas and the like and insert them into your paper before the exam is over.

You can use a handheld scanner or a digital pen, and transfer to the computer must be done by cable. You may not use any equipment that may disturb your fellow students.

Once you are logged in to the relevant platform (itslearning or the Digital Exam system), you can start the test. It is important that you have access to the internet throughout the exam, otherwise your answers will not be saved. You are responsible for making sure that the answers are saved continuously. 

If you leave the test without completing it or if you are interrupted while taking the test, you can return to the test and pick up where you left off. 

You can only submit once, so do not submit until you are ready to finish your exam. 

If you press the ‘submit’ button by mistake before you have finished the test, you must inform the exam invigilator. 

If the exam is conducted on itslearning, there may be a difference between how you normally log in to itslearning and how you log in for the MCQ exam, so please read the instructions carefully.  

The exam invigilator will notify you when there is 30 minutes left of the exam. For an exam on campus, no one may leave the exam room during the last 30 minutes of the exam time. 

You can work on your paper until the exam is over. If you have produced handwritten appendices that are to be part of your exam paper, these must be scanned before the exam is over. The paper must be compiled into one document before the exam is over, unless otherwise stated in the course description. 

The only thing you are allowed to do with your document when the exam ends is to convert the document to PDF and upload your answer in the Digital Exam system.  

Unless otherwise stated in the course description, itslearning or the Digital Exam system: 

• the exam paper must be submitted in the Digital Exam system. 
• you can only submit one file. 
• you can only submit once. 
• the answer must be submitted in PDF format. 
• you must not write your name or civil registration number (CPR) anywhere, as you will then no longer be anonymous. 

If you have problems submitting your exam paper, you must contact an exam invigilator who will then contact IT support.   

When you have submitted your paper, you must show the exam invigilator the submission receipt on the screen. At the same time, the exam invigilator must check that Exam Monitor is still running. You may not leave your seat until the receipt has been approved by the exam invigilators. 

Helping each other or talking to each other is not permitted, and there must be complete silence in the exam room – even when the exam is over. You are not allowed to talk to others until you have left the exam room. 

You can see your assessment in SDU Student Self-Service no later than four weeks after the exam has taken place. The month of July is not included.  

When you have submitted, you will get a receipt on the screen that you have completed all attempts/have submitted.

If the MCQ exam takes place on itslearning you will not receive a receipt by email, and it is usually not possible to see how many points you have earned.
