If you have failed an exam that is part of the first-year examination, specific rules apply because the first-year exam must be passed before the end of your first year of study.  

First-Year Examination on Engineering Programmes

The first-year examination is not a single exam but a series of courses and their exams on your first year of study, collectively referred to as the first-year exam. In the Engineering Programmes, this includes all first semester courses and the second-semester project. For BSc (Eng) in Physics and Technology, it only includes the first semester courses.

You are not entitled to three exam attempts in the first-year examination. However, SDU offers three exams in the first semester courses in January, February and May, respectively. You are automatically registered for the ordinary exam in January, but you must register for the re-exams in February and May yourself. For the second semester project, two exam attempts are offered in June and August, respectively, and you must register for the re-exam in August. For BSc (Eng) in Physics and Technology, three attempts in the first semester courses are offered in January, February and August, respectively.

If you do not pass all the courses in your first-year exam by the end of your first year of study, you will be withdrawn from your study programme at SDU. This applies regardless of whether you have used three exam attempts in all courses or not.

If exceptional circumstances have prevented you from passing the first-year exam, you can apply for a dispensation by submitting the application form TECH Application of Exemption from the Deadlines on Your Study Programme. The Practice of the Academic Study Board

• It is the practice of the Academic Study Board to grant dispensation from the curriculum's rules on the first-year examination in cases with the student's documented serious illness, or documented, serious illness in the immediate family, or comparable, documented personal circumstances that have prevented the student from completing their studies. The temporary causality must be documented. 
• According to the practice of the Academic Study Board, dispensation for long-term study inactivity requires particularly compelling reasons, and an improvement in the condition must be expected within a reasonable timeframe.

Examination Attempts on Engineering Programmes

Absence from exam and submitting a blank exam paper count as an examination attempt.  

You have only two attempts to pass the study start test. Additionally, you have no requirement for three examination attempts for the first-year exam.

Once you have used an exam attempt in a course, whether you have attended or not, you generally cannot that course with another.

The Academic Study Board may grant additional examination attempts if exceptional circumstances prevented you from passing. You can apply for extra examination attempts by submitting the application form TECH Application for Examination Attempts.

• It is the practice of the Academic Study Board to grant additional examination attempts in situations with the student's documented, serious illness, or documented, serious illness in the immediate family as well as comparable, documented personal circumstances that have prevented the student from passing their courses. The temporary causality must be documented. 
• It is the practice of the Academic Study Board to apply the principle of proportionality. This means that the Board considers the number of courses the student has passed on the study programme when assessing exceptional circumstances.

Prerequisites for Courses on Engineering Programmes

The purpose with prerequisites is to ensure that all students have the necessary academic background to succeed in the course. You can find the prerequisites for each course in the course descriptions.

Obligatory Prerequisites: you can register for the course only if you meet the prerequisites. This may require having passed a specific course or having completed all courses on the previous semesters. If the word ”recommended” is not mentioned, the prerequisites are obligatory.

Recommended Prerequisites: these are suggested to help you succeed in the course. If you do not meet the recommended prerequisites, you are not entitled to special counselling or extra tuition.

You can apply for a dispensation from the obligatory prerequisites by submitting the form TECH Application of Exemption from Prerequisites. It is advisable to apply well in advance, prefereably when you register for the course.

Prerequisites – the Practice of the Academic Study Board

• It is the practice of the Academic Study Board to grant exemptions from not meeting the prerequisites for In-Company Project in cases where the student is deemed to have the necessary academic skills and qualifications to take the course, or if a refusal would cause an unreasonable delay in the student’s studies, considering the number of missing courses measured in ECTS-points.
• It is the practice of the Academic Study Board that the aim of the dispensation is to reduce the student’s overall study time compared to a scenario where the student does not apply for the dispensation.

Study Start Test on Engineering Programmes

At the beginning of your first semester, you are required to pass the compulsory study start test.  You have two attempts to pass this test.

Failure to pass the exam by the specified deadline will redult in automatic expulsion from your programme. If exceptional circumstances have prevented you from passing the study start test, you may apply The Academic Study Board for a dispensation by submitting the application form TECH Application of Exemption from the Deadlines on Your Study Programme. Maximum Study Period on Engineering Programmes

Maximum study period sets the latest possible date by which you must complete your study programme. If you do not finish your degree within this timeframe, you will be automatically discharged from SDU. Therefore, it is crucial to be aware of your of your completion deadline: 

• 3-year bachelor's programmes must be completed within the standard duration plus 1 additional year (i.e. 4 years)

If exceptional circumstances arise, or if you are an elite athlete, chairman of an association under the Danish Youth Council or an entrepreneur, you may apply for a dispensation. Maximum study period – the Practice of the Academic Study Board

Study Activity Requirement on Engineering Programmes

As a student at the Faculty of Engineering, you are required to actively engage in your studies by continuously completing and passing courses. All study programmes are designed for students to earn 60 ECTS points per year, and it is expected that you adhere to this standard.

If you fall behind, it is crucial that you pass at least one ECTS qualifying examination within any continuous one-year period. Failure to meet this requirement will result in your withdrawal from the programme.

If exceptional circumstances arise, or if you are an elite athlete, chairman of an association under the Danish Youth Council or an entrepreneur, you may apply for a dispensation.
