Electives

When choosing your elective courses, you can find lists of recommended and available electives further down on this page. You are free to choose from the courses on these lists, provided you meet any entry requirements. You can view them in the registration form in SDU Student Self-Service, along with the mandatory courses in your programme.

Please note that although all courses are available, you should still consider whether you meet any academic prerequisites stated in the course description before registering.

If you wish to take a course at the Faculty of Science that does not appear on the lists of recommended and available electives, nor in your registration form in SDU Student Self‑Service, you must submit an elective application form to the faculty’s student counsellors.

In the application form, you must explain why you would like to take the course and describe your academic qualifications for doing so. You can also indicate if one of your lecturers has recommended that you take the course as an elective, or if the student counsellors have already advised you on the rules regarding electives.

The student counsellors will review the completed application form and assess whether your registration appears to be based on sufficient information, or whether they should offer you guidance regarding academic prerequisites and the rules for elective-course registration.

The student counsellors cannot assess academically whether you ought to take the elective. The purpose of the application form – and any subsequent meeting is solely to ensure that you have had the opportunity to obtain relevant information before making your decision about an elective offered by the Faculty of Science but not already available on your registration form.

Once your form has been approved, and after any necessary meeting, you may be registered for the elective provided that you have room for it in your study plan, meet the entry requirements, and there are available places.

You can also apply to take courses offered by another faculty or university. This requires that you find a course which is academically relevant to your degree programme and which fits into your course of study.

Additionally, you must send an application to your study board for pre-approval of credit transfer. If the study board approves the course, you must attach the pre-approval letter when you register for the course at the faculty or university offering the course. Once you have passed the course, you must apply for final credit transfer so that the course can be registered as a passed elective on your programme.

A few electives offered by the Faculty of Science have a capped number of participants.

As a graduate student at the Faculty of Science, you can take graduate courses offered by the Faculty of Science as electives, as long as you meet any entry requirements. Additionally, you can take undergraduate courses as electives, as long as they are outside your primary field of study.

Courses that overlap with constituent subject elements, or which overlap with already passed subject elements, cannot be approved as electives.

If you regret your choice of elective, you may change an elective for another up to three weeks after the start of the semester.

3 exam attempts

You have three attempts to pass each elective, just as you do for your other courses.

If you do not pass the examination by the third attempt, you will generally not be able to continue your programme. Therefore, it is important that you consider your choice of electives carefully before enrolling.
