Accommodation abroad

Most universities abroad either have an accommodation office or will point you in the right direction in your search for accommodation.

Applying for accommodation can be part of the admissions process at the host university. However, this is not always the case, so please read the information sent to you by your host university carefully.

Some universities have their own dorms on campus. This often fosters a special campus culture and close relations between students. Some dorms might be reserved for certain groups of students, e.g. based on gender, undergraduates, graduates, etc.

Other universities help you find accommodation in private dorms, via housing agencies, or private landlords.

Prices can vary a lot; in some cities, you will find it to be cheaper to live than what you are used to in Denmark. On the other hand, it is usually more expensive in bigger cities, such as capitals and the like.

Some cities/countries lack student accommodation, so it is important to check out the situation at your destination. As of September 2023, we are aware of difficulties finding accommodation at the following destinations: the Netherlands, Barcelona, Venice, Stockholm, and Iceland. This should not deter you from applying, but it is important that you are prepared to be very proactive in the search for housing.

In case you have not been able to find long-term accommodation before your studies begin, it might be an option to stay at a hostel for the first few days while searching for a room or apartment. This might be an idea if you are two or more students traveling together.

Your apartment/dorm room in Denmark

When you are going abroad it is important to be aware of your living situation in Denmark for when you get back.

In Odense and Sønderborg, it is possible for you to sublease your apartment/dorm room to an international student, studying at SDU in the same period, through the Accommodation Office.

SDU Accommodation Office's guidelines and subletting form can be found below:
