First-year exam

The first‑year exam is not a single examination but a set of assessments that you must pass by the end of your first year of study.

In the first year of all bachelor’s programmes, selected exams that are part of what is called the first-year exam.

You must pass the exams included in the first-year exam by the end of your first year of study. If you do not pass the first-year exam within the deadline, you will, as a rule, be withdrawn from the programme.

The bachelor’s programme in Computer Science includes the following courses and associated exams in the first-year exam. All courses are offered in the autumn semester:

  • Study introduction (5 ECTS)
  • Discrete Mathematics (5 ECTS)
  • Introduction to Programming (10 ECTS)
  • Algorithms and Data Structures (5 ECTS)
  • Programming Project (5 ECTS)

Requirements for the first-year exam

  • The exams included in the first-year exam must be passed by the end of the examination period in your second semester.

    If, due to extraordinary circumstances, you are unable to pass one or more exams included in the first-year exam by the end of your first year of study, you can apply to the study board for a dispensation to postpone the first-year exam.

  • For the exams included in the first-year exam, certain special rules apply because the first-year exam must be passed by the end of your first year of study.

    Most exams included in the first-year exam are offered in the first semester, and you have three attempts to pass these exams. However, there are some programmes where an exam or an exam element in the second semester is part of the first-year exam – here you only have two attempts to pass the respective exams and exam elements.

    If you have not passed the exams that are part of the first-year exam by the end of the exam period in your second semester, access to new exam attempts will be revoked, regardless of whether you have used all your exam attempts. This means it is very important that you register for the re-exam in the same exam period as the regular exam.

    If, due to extraordinary circumstances, you have used all your exam attempts without passing, you can apply for an dispesation for additional exam attempts.

  • If you do not pass the first-year exam by the end of your first year of study, you will, as a rule, be deregistered from SDU and cannot continue your bachelor’s programme.

    Therefore, it is important that you familiarize yourself with the rules and consider your options.

  • The study board can grant you dispensation for postponing the first-year exam and/or dispensation for additional exam attempts if extraordinary circumstances make it necessary.

    If you wish to apply for dispensation to postpone the first-year exam or for additional exam attempts, you must submit a reasoned application to your study board, as it is the study board that processes your application.
