Professor Kathrin Maurer: Presentation on Goethe, power, and polarization

Are we living in an age of polarization, power politics, and moral compromise?

“Two souls, alas, are housed within my breast!” Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Faust, Part One.

Sometimes the best way to understand the present is to revisit the classics. More than 200 years after its publication, Goethe’s Faust I remains strikingly relevant. The drama explores the struggle between good and evil, the seduction of power, the allure of immoral bargains, and the consequences of unchecked ambition.
Can literature and theatre help us make sense of contemporary politics and society?

Join us for an afternoon and evening of reflection, discussion, and performance at Betty Nansen Teatret, featuring:
  • Introduction to Faust by Professor Kathrin Maurer (Fellow, Nordic Humanities Center)
  • Lecture by Professor Christian Rostbøll on politics, power, and the erosion of moral responsibility
  • Followed by the theatre production of Faust in the Betty Nansen Theater.
Lectures: 16:00-18:00
Performance: 20:00
