My Competence Portfolio

Create well-being and direction – from student life to your future.

Starting a science degree at SDU can feel overwhelming. You might have just moved away from home. There are new subjects, new people and new expectations. Later in your studies, you’ll face more choices, and questions about the future can easily weigh on your mind.

My Competence Portfolio is a special initiative for students in the Faculty of Science at SDU. We help you see the bigger picture in your degree, so you gain clarity and a sense of control during a busy study period. Here, you’ll have the time and space to build a clear understanding of what you’re learning and how it connects to your goals.

It’s about giving you the chance to reflect, so you find meaning and confidence along the way – and feel better prepared both now and for what comes next. We’ll guide you in identifying and understanding the skills your degree provides, and how these can create value – during your studies and in future employment.

You’ll automatically be invited to workshops each semester, and you’ll also encounter elements of My Competence Portfolio in some of your courses.

What will I gain from My Competence Portfolio?

When you take part in My Competence Portfolio, you get more than workshops and reflection. You gain practical tools that help you stay organised, make better decisions and feel more confident – both during your studies and in your future career.

Here are some of the key benefits:

  • A clear overview of your skills – see how your strengths develop from semester to semester.
  • Direction and confidence – learn the language to describe your skills, so you can use them in study groups, projects, and job applications.
  • Better decision-making – when choosing courses, projects, or student jobs, you’ll know what strengthens your profile.
  • Preparation for the future – My Competence Portfolio supports you all the way from your first semester to your first job.

FAQ

  • My Competence Portfolio is a unique initiative at the Faculty of Science at SDU that supports you throughout your entire degree. Our aim is to help you thrive during your studies, strengthen your academic skills, and prepare you for life after university.

    This is more than a local idea – the project is funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation with a grant of DKK 6 million and forms part of a research study exploring how reflection and awareness of skills can improve well-being, learning, and completion rates.

  • You’ll encounter My Competence Portfolio throughout your programme – without having to do anything extra. It appears in different ways:

    • Workshops – tailored to each semester, with themes such as managing heavy workloads, teamwork and career choices.
    • Reflection in teaching – in selected courses, you’ll have time to think about what you’re learning and how it strengthens you.
    • Digital tool – one place for your reflections and skills, which you can take with you after graduation.

    The digital tool is expected to launch in 2026, and all students on SDU’s science programmes will automatically have access. Here, you can track your progress semester by semester, set goals, and create a competence profile to carry forward into your future.

Workshops – your opportunity to strengthen yourself throughout your studies

Our workshops take place locally across all science programmes. You’ll automatically receive notifications on itslearning about where and when they are held.

Each semester focuses on a theme that reflects the challenges many students face. These sessions give you space to share experiences, learn from others and gain practical tools to stay organised, boost your well-being and develop your skills.

All workshops are hands-on, with plenty of room for reflection and dialogue – and you’ll leave with concrete tools that make a real difference.
