Exam not passed

If you do not pass the ordinary exam, or if you are absent from the regular exam, you have the opportunity to take a re-exam in the same exam period as the regular exam.

If you wish to take the re-exam in the same exam period as the regular exam, it is important that you register for the re-exam during the registration period, even if you have not yet received your results or attended the exam.

If a course is offered for the last time, there may be mandatory and automatic registration for the re-exam.

If, due to extraordinary circumstances, you have used your three attempts without passing an exam, you can apply to the study board for a dispensation for additional exam attempts.

You are automatically enrolled in the first exam attempt when you register for a course. However, if you need to register for the second or third exam attempt, you can sign up for the exam without being enrolled in the course.

If, for example, you need to retake an exam the year after your first attempt, it is generally a good idea to attend the course again to improve your chances of passing. The faculty’s student counsellors can help you create a study plan and discuss your options.

If you are not enrolled in the course but wish to register for the exam, you must do so during the special exam registration periods.

As a rule, you have three attempts to pass each exam. If, due to unusual circumstances, you have used your three exam attempts without passing the exam, you can apply for an extra exam attempt.

You can apply the Study Board for an exemption to get an extra exam attempt. In order for you to be granted an exemption, you must be able to explain and document the unusual circumstances that prevented you from passing the exam in all three exam attempts.

If you do not pass your exam, it may affect your course of study. Some study programmes have certain prerequisites that you must meet in order for you to continue your studies. For example, it may be a requirement that you have passed specific courses or that you have acquired a certain number of ECTS credits before you can do an internship, write the bachelor project or a final project. 

Check whether certain prerequisites are required in your curriculum and in the course descriptions. 

If you do not meet these prerequisites or are in doubt as to whether you meet them, it is a good idea to use one of the study programme’s academic advisors or SDU’s counselling services. If you do not pass your exam, it may affect whether you meet the requirements of your study programme, which include the time limit for completing your degree and the requirement to pass at least one exam that triggers ECTS credits each year.
