Help you can get as a new graduate

What to do now you’ve graduated?

As a new graduate from SDU looking for a job, you have several resources both at SDU and from other institutions that will help you with your next step on your journey to employment. On this page, you’ll find information about these.

What resources do you have as a new graduate?

Unemployment insurance fund (A-kasse)

You are not automatically insured against unemployment. In order to be entitled to unemployment benefits (dagpenge) effective from a month after graduating, it’s important that you register as a member of an unemployment insurance fund no later than two weeks after you have graduated. An unemployment insurance fund is a private member organization that is oftentimes connected to a specific labor union. The unemployment insurance fund administers your unemployment benefits. They also help you as an unemployed by offering courses and advice about the rules and regulations of receiving benefits as well as offering guidance with regards to your job search situation. Get in touch with your unemployment insurance fund to find out more about how they can help you.

Your municipal job center

In some municipalities there are departments that specifically help unemployed academics. But regardless of whether such specific efforts are established in your municipality, you can expect that someone can help you with your job search or help you connect with companies. You must register as unemployed through the job center once you graduate. Start by contacting your unemployment insurance fund (A-kasse) to get information about what to do while unemployed.

You can also look at Odense municipal job center for unemployed academics. They have a website where you can find jobs from both Odense and other cities in Denmark as well as sign up for their job bank and mentor scheme.

The Career Guidance at SDU

As a graduate, you are still more than welcome to make use of the career guidance at SDU. You can still book a session or sign up for our career events. Some graduates use the Career Guidance to stay connected to the university or for new inputs and perspectives on life after graduation.

The Career Guidance’s web pages

On these pages, you’ll find a variety of resources we’ve put together for your job search. You can e.g. get input to making your CV and writing a job application or how to prepare for a job interview.

Other great options

Alumnet – a SDU alumni community

On Alumnet, you can sign up to join SDU’s official network of alumni. It is a digital space where students, alumni and lecturers meet to actively facilitate and support each other’s career developments. As an alumnus, you not only get access to the community, but also to online academic publications from the library, discounts to Folkeuniversitetet and much more.

Mentoring initiatives

Through SDU’s alumni network, you can get a mentor both while unemployed and as an employee. Read more about how a mentor can help you in the guide on alumnet.sdu.dk.
