Arrival: 8th of August 2020.

Journey home: 23th of August 2020.

Length: 2 weeks (mandatory). It is a requirement that the length of the stay abroad is a minimum of 14 days.

Number of places for the destination: Min 7 persons, no upper limit

This program focuses on health problems in a global context. You will meet a number of international NGOs, visit hospitals, clinics, universities and meet people who are passionate about preventing, improving and making accessible healthcare in Palestine.

You will also experience the everyday life in a Palestinian refugee camp and the health problems specific to this context.

The program offers many excursions combined with relevant lectures. There will be two days off during the stay where you can experience Israel and Palestine by yourself; but the stay is a group journey at its core.

The lectures during the stay take place partly on our global platform in Bethlehem but will mainly take place on excursions to many of the West Bank’s towns. We prioritize meeting health professional groups and persons where they work. We adopt a broader view on health and healing, where the social environment plays a crucial role. Therefore, a large part of the lectures is organized as excursions, rather than ‘class teaching’. The lectures will be in English.

The programmed activities will give you a broad perspective on health issues and the health system in Palestine, and this will be the main focus of the program. But we also try to adapt the program to the background and interests of the students involved.

In 2020, the program will include:

1st week:

  • Arrival to Tel Aviv and drive to Bethlehem
  • Introduction to Palestine, the historical background of the conflict and relevant actors
  • Introduction to the three sectors in the healthcare system: UN/NGO, public and private by a guest lecturer
  • Visit to public hospitals and hospitals run by NGOs
  • Excursion to a refugee camp with a visit to an UNWRA clinic
  • Presentation of Health Science study programs and current research programs at Al-Quds University
  • Focus on the psycho-social consequences on children and youths of the conflict.

 2nd week:

  • Visit to Palestinian Ministry of Health
  • Focus on humanitarian relief and the work done by Red Crescent
  • Visit to NGOs using empowerment in health promotion
  • Focus on human rights and rehabilitation
  • Trip to Hebron with a focus on everyday life in a conflict area, a tour of the Old Town and a visit to Hebron Hospital
  • 2 days of volunteer work or individual visits (placement at a hospital, health clinic or NGO based on academic field/interest)
  • Days off with possibility for planning your own trips

Please note that the final program may be subject to change.

The study trip is not a luxury stay and you should expect to live under simple but decent conditions. You will stay at our global platform in the center of Bethlehem. The women will be staying in basic dormitories with lavatories and showers at the platform, while the men will stay at our hostel across the street. The global platform is an education center for the regions’ youth and is complete with classrooms and a cosy garden. This is where you will eat breakfast with the other participants, have lectures, enjoy the sun on the roof top - and security is in order. All participants have access to the hostel common areas, kitchen and washing machine.

If you would like to stay in a single room, this will be possible at a nearby hotel for an extra fee of DKK 1,400, as long as rooms are available. Please make your reservation in due time upon registration with Global Contact.

It is a requirement that you have travel insurance. It is strongly recommended that you have an extended travel insurance that covers:

  • Personal accident insurance
  • Public liability insurance
  • Medical emergency service
  • Home transport in case of illness
  • Legal aid
  • Holiday home insurance

You can find information about which vaccines are required for the country you are travelling to on Statens Serum Instituts website. Make an appointment with your own doctor to get the vaccines.

Visa rules differ from country to country and are subject to change. For instance, some countries may demand that your passport is valid in excess of 6 months after you have left the country. Therefore, always consult the guidelines specified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs valid for Danish citizens.

NB. If you're not a Danish citizen, other visa rules apply. To learn which visa rules apply to you, contact the local representation or your embassy/consulate in Denmark.

As a Danish citizen, you can travel to Palestine without a visa for up to 90 days. It is however a requirement that your passport is valid for six months after the end of the stay. Make sure your passport lives up to this requirement! Visa is free of charge and you will receive it when you arrive at the airport in Tel Aviv. Here, you will apply for a regular tourist visa. During the pre-departure meeting, we will take you through the entry process, and go through all the information about visa and entry to the country.
