Insurance

Generally, it is your own responsibility to take out insurance when studying abroad. It is important that you find out which kind of insurance coverage you need when studying abroad.

We strongly recommend that you take out travel insurance covering property theft and medical treatment in case of emergency as well as liability insurance, insuring you against third party risks.

Combining a study abroad period or international internship with private holiday, the yellow card (social security card) does not provide coverage even if the total duration of the stay is less than one month.

Therefore, you must either take out travel insurance for the holiday period or get an EU Health Insurance Card. The card entitles you to treatment when you stay in another EU/EEA country for more than one month. Contact the National Registration Office to have the card made, there you can also get further information on what the card covers and whether you need it in your particular case. It makes a difference, for example, if it is a paid internship.
For further information students in Odense can contact Odense Municipal on +45 6614 8814, extension 4121, 4122 or 4127. Students in Sønderborg can contact the municipal on +45 7412 6410.

When undertaking paid internship abroad you will be considered as an employee in the country in question if your salary exceeds a certain amount, which varies from one country to another. This means that you – regardless of the duration of the stay – must enter the health insurance scheme of the country and pay a contribution.
