Examination Appeals on Engineering Programmes at the Faculty of Engineering

• Academic issues (questions, assignments etc.)
• Legal issues (if the exam has not been in conducted accordance with the present Danish laws and common principles of administrative law)
• Errors and irregularities during an examination (eg. noice nuisance or technical problems)

Deadline

• You must have submitted your appeal within 14 days of the assessment being announced.

The appeal can lead to a lower mark

• Your appeal can lead to a lower mark. If you are offered a re-examination or a re-assessment as a result of your appeal, this can lead to a lower mark, and you cannot appeal over this new mark.

No possibility of re-assessment in oral exams

• Appeals about oral exams cannot lead to a re-assessment, but only to a re-examination with new assessors, if the decision of the university is in your favour.

No possibility for anonymity

• You cannot file an exam appeal anonymously. The persons who process your appeal, including the examiner/s and the external censor/s, will know who you are. However, all persons involved process your case in confidentiality.

It is a good idea to give reasons for your appeal

• It is a good idea to give reasons for your appeal, so that the persons processing the appeal have a good decision basis. This means, that you should describe in writing, what you appeal against, and why. Give a good explanation. It is always good to refer to the learning goals set in the course description.
• It is advisable to contact the examiner before you file the appeal, and ask for feedback on the grounds of the assessment. Please note that the examiner is not obliged to give this feedback.
• It is advisable that you make notes directly after an oral exam about what has been said, and save notes from possible preparation time. 

Participation in a possible reexam while the appeal is being processed

• If you have failed the exam and a reexam is being held, you should sit the reexam while your appeal is being processed. If you pass the reexam and the appeal is still being processed, the appeal is repealed.

• If you have submitted the appeal within the deadline (within 14 days after the announcement of the assessment), the Secretariat of the Academic Study Board forwards the appeal to the original assessors, who have a fortnight to make a statment. The statement of the assessors is sent to you. You have a week to make your comments to the statement. You should send your comments to studienaevn@tek.sdu.dk
• The Faculty of Engineering makes a decision in the case, based on the statement and your comments to it. There is no deadline for this step, but it will be done as speedily as possible.
• It takes typically 2-3 months to process an exam appeal.

• If the decision of the Faculty of Engineering is not in your favour, you can refer the decision re. academic issues to a board of appeals.
• Your appeal against the decision of the Faculty of Engineering must be submitted within 14 days from the day you receive the decision of the Faculty. The requirements for the appeal against the decision are the same as for the exam appeal, and should also be sent to a studienaevn@tek.sdu.dk.
• The board of appeals consists of two external censors, a teacher within the academic area as well as a student within the academic area.
• The board of appeals makes its decision within two months after you have submitted your appeal against the decision (July excluded), and you will be informed about it as soon as possible.
• The board of appeals can make one of the following decisions:
  • Written exams only: you will be offered a new assessement (re-assessment)* with new assessors; or You will be offered a new examination (re-examination)* with new assessors; or 
    Your apppeal will be rejected. 

Re-assessment and re-examination can lead to a lower grade than the original exam result.

The decision of the board of appeals is final, and you cannot make further appeals about the academic issues.

• If you wish to appeal against legal issues, ie. You consider that the case has not been processed in accordance with the current Danish legislation and the general principles of administrative law. Your appeal against the decision of the Faculty of Engineering must be submitted within 14 days from the day you receive the decision of the Faculty. The requirements for the appeal against the legal issues in connection with decision are the same as for the exam appeal, and should also be sent to studienaevn@tek.sdu.dk. The university makes a statement, which you get the opportunity of commenting upon, after which the case will be forwarded to Danish Agency for Higher Education and Science
