Special examination conditions

The need for special examination conditions can be due to long-term or temporary circumstances. Special examination conditions can be many different things, e.g.

  • extended time for the exam
  • shielding
  • aids, such as programs, headsets or scanner pens.

The purpose of special exam conditions is to put you on an equal footing with your fellow students, so you can complete the exam on equal terms.

Special examination conditions do not change the academic level or the competence objectives of the course. Therefore, your application may be rejected, even if you have a documented physical or mental disability.

You can apply for special examination conditions for a single exam, for a shorter period (e.g. a semester) or for your entire period of study. Please note that you must apply again if you change your study programme – also from bachelor's to master's programme.

Apply for an exemption for special examination conditions

You can apply the Study Board for an exemption for special examination conditions. The Study Board will assess whether you are entitled to special examination conditions and whether what you are applying for is possible. As a general rule, the special examination conditions will not change the form of exam.

Make sure to send your application well in advance of the exam for which you need the exemption. Otherwise, it may not be possible to provide the special examination conditions you are applying for.

Documentation

You must attach relevant documentation when you apply for special examination conditions, such as an SPS statement on support needs, a dyslexia test or a doctor’s certificate.

You must also explain why your disability means that you have a need for special examination conditions.

The Academic Study Board can provide accommodations if you

  • Have a mental disability,
  • Have a physical disability,
  • Are 28 weeks pregnant or more or,
  • Have recently given birth (generally up to 3 months postpartum).

Depending on the nature of the disability, the Academic Study Board may approve:

  • Extended exam duration for written exams,
  • Extended preparation time for oral exams, if preparation time is applicable,
  • Relevant assistive technology for dyslexia,
  • Use of headphones during written exams; and/or
  • Setting up screens around your workspace during written exams.

Please note that some exams with surveillance do not allow aids. This means that access to the internet, programmes/software not included in the assistive technology for dyslexia, and notes saved on your PC, etc., are prohibited. Using these during the exam is considered cheating, evein for students with disabilities.

If you have a chronic disability and the Academic Study Board deems special examination conditions necessary to equate you with others during exams, the dispensation will cover your entire study programme. This means you only need to apply for a dispensation once during the programme. However, if you have been granted special examination conditions for your BSc or BEng programme, you must apply for a new dispensation when starting a master’s programme.
Time limited dispensations for special examination conditions have a specific validity period.

You can apply for special exam conditions via SPOC: TECH Application for Special Exam Conditions.

The Academic Study Board has the following practice when assessing special exam conditions:
  • Special exam conditions are approved only if the competence goals of the study proramme can still be met.
  • Students with disabilities must meet the same academic standards as other students.
  • Student must be evaluated in a variety of evaluation forms throughout the study programme.
  • Generally, the approval of assistive technology for dyslexia does not include the use of speech-to-text during written exams with surveillance.
  • In principle, it is not possible to obtain a dispensation for online exams for students due to a long-term disability.
  • As a general rule, further extensions of exam duration are not granted based on several disabilities.

If your application is approved, always bring the approval to all exams and be prepared to show it to the invigilators.

If you have a dispensation for special furniture that requires a ”relocation worker”, inform Teknisk Service at eksamensvagt@sdu.dk at least eight days before the exam.

If there are, as part of the assessment, written tests during the teaching period, please remember to present the dispensation to your lecturer no later than a week before each test.
