Bachelor project

The process

Form groups of 2-3 students and agree on subject area and topic that you want to work with.
If you not are already in a group, you must contact your local subject director.

Alternatively it is possible to write the bachelor project individually.

You must hand ind your wish for subject area and topics area as a group on the the digital form. You must write 5-10 lines about the problem that you want to work with preferably including suggestion of theoretical framework and methods to be used in empirical work connected to the project. The better you can formulate your problem, the larger the chance of approval. Seek inspiration for how to formulate a topic in the predefined topics under each subject area.

  • The group must decide who creates the form. It is only the person creating the form who can later edit the form. Other group members receive an email about changes in the form and must approve these. If they do not do so, the form will not move on in the work flow.
  • The person creating the form needs email-addresses for other group members to fill in the form.
  • Notice that you at this stage can only fill in the fields for group members, indication of subject area and wished topic. You can fill in the remaining fields once you have received a supervisor and a topic.
  • Notice that the form is not submitted until you click on "send" (save is not enough). Notice also that once you have created the form (clicked on "save"), you can no longer add or remove group members. Therefore - do not fill in the form until you have formed your group. If you need to make changes in the group composition you may contact the study administration until the deadline for filling in the form.
  • If the form is rejected, you have to create a new form. You cannot edit in the form.

Deadlines:

  • November 1st for bachelor projects handed-in in May and defended in June.
  • May 1st for bachelor projects handed-in in December and defended in Januar.

Deadline for submitting the supervisor agreement with your topic and working title for final approval (same form as used for registration of topic).

If a topic/working title that is later approved is not submitted by this date, you may not participate in ordinary exam and an examination attempt has been used.

Use the same form as for wish for topic.

Deadlines:

  • March 1st for bachelor projects handed-in in may and defended in June.
  • October 1st for bachelor projects handed-in in december and defended in januar.

Use your supervisor wisely. Read about what can you expect from your supervisor and how you can get the most out of supervision (Which also includes students writing their bachelor project).

Be advised, that the bachelor project must  comply to the formalities for written assignments.

Hand-in via Digital Exam. Deadline for submission will appear in the exam plan.
If relevant: In Digital Exam you can tick off if the bachelor project is confidential.
If you need to print a confidential disclosure agreement, you will find it here:

Oral defense.
The oral defense takes place individually if you have prepared the project individually and otherwise in the group in which you have written the project report. Present at the defense is you (and the other group members), the internal examiner (normally your supervisor), and an external examiner. The external examiner is often from business but may also be employed at another university. The defense is open to the public, but there are seldom additional people present.

The oral defense starts by you/your group presenting your project. You can see the time set aside for this part and for the entire defense in the course description under “Examination regulations → Exam - bachelor project with oral defense → Additional Information”. After the presentation, the internal examiner will examine you in the project and related theory and methods. The external examiner typically also poses a couple of questions.

The external examiner and the examiner must be able to do an individual grading after the defense. Therefore, expect that the examiner asks specific questions to specific group members if you do the defense in a group. You can help the individual grading by ensuring that all group members actively contribute during the presentation and the examination.

You cannot expect that there is a projector in the examination room, and/or that there is time for setting it up. Therefore, expect to do your presentation directly on your laptop. Out of precaution, bring a hard copy of the presentation for the internal examiner and the external examiner.

The presentation should give the internal examiner and not least the external examiner an introduction to the project. Topics can be:

- State your problem and elaborate on why you found it interesting and why the problem has academic and practical relevance – including for a company that you have possibly collaborated with.
- Shortly specify your research aim and the research method(s) employed.
- Elaborate on your choices of theories and methods and the reason for your choices. Also, find time to touch upon other theories and methods that could have been employed and in which way it would change your thesis/results. If you have found errors (e.g. in a proof) or other shortcomings in the literature, it is fine to mention this and the consequences this has had for your project.
- Summarize shortly the most important results and discuss challenges that you have had in reaching the results and assess their strength.
- State the implications of the results. Reflect on possible recommendations and a possible need for additional research.
- If anything new of relevance for your thesis/problem statement has shown up, for example new academic or newspaper articles or feedback on a presentation in the company if you prepared the thesis in collaboration with a company) you could also put that out in your presentation, as it shows that you are motivated even after handing in the thesis.

If you fail the bachelor project, you have the following options:

  • To submit a revised report in August/February for the second attempt and in September/March for the third attempt. Date for submission and oral defense will appear from the plan of examinations. You must register for these re-examinations as for all other re-examinations.
  • To postpone your second or third attempt for a later examination term, where you are to submit a new project within a new topic.

If you choose to do a revision, you may meet with your supervisor who will explain why you failed.

If you have prepared the report as a group, and all members have failed, you must hand in the revised report as a group. If only some of the group members have failed, the members that have failed must make an agreement with the supervisor concerning the revision of the report in a way that secures that what they hand in is their own work.

If you choose to postpone your second and/or third attempt to a later examination term, you must start over with a new topic and possibly another supervisor. This means that you follow the entire process again, registering for the course, filling in the digital form etc. Notice that you need to hand in an entirely new report. You are not allowed to use elements from the report, you have handed in in previous attempts. You will be offered supervision to the same extent as for your first attempt.

Course description for bachelor project

Topic

You must yourself find a topic for your bachelor project. The topic must be within business economics – that is accounting, finance, organization or strategy, marketing or operations management. The topic must be relevant for your study programme. You will define the problem in detail in collaboration with your supervisor.

This means that when you by 1 November wish for a topic and possibly a supervisor, you only need to have an idea about what you want the work on. You have the opportunity to submit two topics within the same subject area, but you only need to give in one topic. You have the opportunity to wish for a specific supervisor. If you do so, please indicate your wish in the box where you write your topic.
