Formal requirements for written assignments

On this page, you can read about the formal requirements for written assignments, including requirements for layout, references, structuring of an academic assignment, etc.

The following formal requirements apply to individual study activities, bachelor’s projects, company projects and master’s thesis reports in degree programmes at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, unless otherwise specified in the course description.

  • Project type Recommended length (including spaces)* 
     Individual study activity (5 ECTS)  30,000–55,000 characters
     Individual study activity (10 ECTS)  45,000–65,000 characters
     Individual study activity (15 ECTS)  55,000–75,000 characters
     Bachelor project (15 ECTS)  55,000–75,000 characters
     Master’s thesis (30 ECTS)  65,000–90,000 characters
     Master’s thesis (60 ECTS)  85,000–105,000 characters

    The number of characters stated above excludes the title page, abstract/summary, table of contents, bibliography/references, figure legends and appendices. Figures and tables each count as 1 character.

    * You may only exceed the recommended length with the approval of your main supervisor.

  • Bachelor’s projects and master’s thesis reports must include both an abstract in English and an abstract in Danish. Each of these must not exceed 300 words.

  • The title page must include the following information:

    • Project title in Danish and English
    • Degree programme
    • Author’s name
    • Supervisor’s name
    • Length (number of characters)

  • The following paragraphs can serve as inspiration and are open to discussion with your supervisor. The elements given in bold contribute to the total length of the report.

    Project scope Recommended length (including spaces)* 
     10 ECTS  40,000–65,000 characters
     15 ECTS  50,000–75,000 characters
     20 ECTS  55,000–80,000 characters
     25 ECTS  60,000–85,000 characters
     30 ECTS  65,000–90,000 characters

    * You may only exceed the recommended length with your main supervisor’s approval.

    Title page

    The title page must include the following information:

    • Project title in Danish and English
    • Name of the degree programme
    • Author’s name
    • Supervisor’s name
    • Length (number of characters)

    Report elements

    The elements marked in bold count towards the total length of the report.

    • Company and project context + your role (company/context description, your responsibilities and concrete contributions)
    • Problem framing and success criteria (problem statement and scope, success criteria agreed with the company, what “good” looks like for the company) 
    • Approach: methods, data and professional choices (methods and data, why these choices fit the company context, key assumptions) 
    • Results and delivered outcomes (results/solutions and concrete deliverables to the company; value/use for the company)
    • Quality, validation, and limitations (how you validated results, data/implementation constraints, limitations and risks) 
    • Reflection and learning in practice (collaboration and communication with the company/interdisciplinary team, ethics/IP considerations, key challenges and problem-solving, personal learning objectives and skills developed, what you would do differently, next steps and future relevance, overall takeaway and future relevance (what you learned from working with a company and how it affects your future studies/career))
