Museums are often romanticised as repositories of relics of the bygone era and a significant part of the museums’ role towards representation and substantiation of the un-transcribed social dialogue is conveniently bypassed.
When we begin to see the element of life in objects of history, the narrative of the social discourse precedes the material obsession and the aspects of visual art alternately become components of visual lexicon. This consequently, enriches our understanding of history of art and design as a snippet of life rather than a product of history and the art becomes an entity representing the varied conflicts and concurrences in visual formats.
The National Museum, New Delhi, India houses an extensive collection narrating the continuity of Indian Art ranging across five thousand years. Highlighting the masterpieces of the collection the first segment of the presentation will focus on the Jewellery collection from the National Museum and elucidate the intersections of the material history & its visual representation. Shifting the focus from material to the social, the second segment will be a chronologically arranged tableau of the artisans, craftsmen and artists that have found their due representation in Indian Art. The concluding segment will entail the art and spectator dialogue in the museum space through a series of photographs
