When firms develop a new product, they often use open innovation. Open innovation projects are when firms invite one or multiple partners to join the innovation project.  Both private and public firms apply open innovation, and partners can include customers, suppliers, users, and/or other associates such as universities and Governmental Technology Offices (GTO’s). Who to involve? What are the motives, challenges and barriers for firm(s) in relation to open innovation? How to organize open innovation projects?  Are there different strategies for public and private firms?

Innovation and marketing are often integrated. Examples of questions to investigate include: How can firms involve customers in innovation projects (e.g. new products)? What types of knowledge are relevant from the customers and how can we acquire it? What is the innovation process for developing new products? What are lead-users and when and how should firms involve such stakeholders?

Researchers, firms, and the media talk and write about the topic of disruptive innovation. A starting point for a bachelor project can be: What exactly is meant by ‘disruptive innovation’? Which firms (and which types of firms) have introduced disruptive innovation? How can firms ’think’ disruptively?

Emerging technologies such a robotics, drones and trends such as digitalization present firms with new threats, but also with new market opportunities. Interesting topics for a bachelor project could be an analysis of how a specific firm could benefit from integrating one or more emerging technologies into their business, or an analysis of the disruptive potential one or more trends or emerging technologies present for a firms or industry.
Increasing the sustainability of business processes is a key concern of most firms as is communicating sustainability progress to stakeholders without fear of backlash and concerns for greenwashing. Interesting topics for bachelor projects could be opportunities for sustainable innovation and business development for a specific firm, or an analysis of how an industry or firm best measure and communicate their sustainability initiatives and progress.
