Subject Specific Competences

Knowledge and understanding

The master's programme in Economics, cand.oecon., provides you with knowledge based on the highest international research within the profile area. This gives you the ability to:

  • Understand, and on a scientific basis, reflect on this knowledge as well as identify relevant scientific problems
  • work independently and, with a systematic, goal-oriented and analytical approach, solve various problems, both individually and in collaboration with others
  • structure your own learning and seek and adapt new knowledge acquired from national and international sources

Skills

As a MSc graduate in Economics you are able to:

  • work methodologically correct with both qualitative and quantitative analyses
  • apply theories and principles to new but related economic problems
  • reason economically to substantiate economic claims

Further you can draw up new models for analysis and solutions based on run analyses, and communicate and discuss these results and professional problems with colleagues, company management and the surrounding society.

Competences

Within your chosen profile area you can:

  • manage work and development situations which are complex, unpredictable and which require new models of solutions
  • independently implement and carry through technical and cross-functional collaboration as well as claim professionally responsibility
  • independently take responsibility for your own technical development and specialization
  • analyze and formulate complex economic problems on a scientific basis, both individually and in collaboration with others as well as under time constraint
  • assess the utility and limitations of theories and methods and, based on that, provide a basis for decision

Further you are proficient in the use of IT tools and statistics, which means that you can handle and assess data material. Beyond this you are especially trained in applying statistical methodology within economics, which enables you to solve quantitative analysis problems.

 

The Master of Science in Economics offers opportunities for employment within a very broad professional spectrum. Thus, the programme is targeted towards employment in both the public and private sectors, including businesses and trade organisations. MSc graduates in Economics also find employment in international organisations such as the European Union, OECD, the UN, etc. where economic expertise is in high demand.

Finally, the MSc in Economics can be the starting point for a career in research, e.g. as a Ph.D. student.

When you work with different academic challenges and tools, you acquire general academic competences.

Often it is not the product that’s being evaluated, but your capacity to be critical about the process you have gone through, and how you have approached the challenges during the process to the product.

What are my general academic competences?

Through your programme you’ll acquire among others the following general academic competences: 

  • Being able to isolate, define and analyze a professional problem by using relevant theories and methods
  • Being able to systematize complex knowledge and data and select and prioritize that which is important for the subject matter
  • Being able to critically assess the various theories and methods in the academic field
  • Being able to apply concepts precisely and consistently and being able to engage in dialogue and argue on a basic theoretical foundation
  • Being able to  critically assess sources and document them
  • Being able to convey professional problems and solutions in a way that make them relevant and understandable to various segments
  • Being able to handle complex and development-oriented situations and cooperate and being able to both give and accept constructive criticism
  • Being able to work independently, disciplined, structured and goal-oriented, and keep  deadlines and  formalities
