Credit transfer

Below you can read more about different types of credit tranfers and what information you will be asked to provide when filling out the application form.

If you have previously passed parts of another programme at the same level without completing the programme in question, you are obliged to apply for start credits once you have been admitted to SDU. This also applies if you do not want to transfer credit for the courses.

Your application must contain the following:

  • Information about any previous degree programmes on the same level in which you have been enrolled.
  • A transcript of records for any courses you have previously passed at the same level.
  • Official course descriptions for the courses in question. As a minimum, the individual course description must state academic objectives, level. and weighting in ECTS, preferably also an examination syllabus or literature list.

The above also applies if you do not wish to have the courses credited.

You must submit your application as soon as possible and no later than one month after commencing your degree programme. This is because you might get credit for courses in the first semester and consequently not be required to sit exams in those courses.

Apply for starting credits via the system SPOC.

If you have completed another programme at the same level, you can apply to transfer credit for one or more courses to your current programme.

  • If you want credits for a compulsory course in your programme, you must have passed courses that cover the course description for that course.
  • If you want credits for an elective course, the course must be at the same level as your programme and be within the scope of your programme's competence description.

You must include the following attachments with your application:

  • Transcripts of course activities passed.
  • Official course descriptions for the courses in question. As a minimum, each course description must state academic objectives, level, and weighting in ECTS, and preferably an examination syllabus or literature list.

Apply for credit transfer via the system SPOC.

You must apply for pre-approval of courses (credits) if you want to:

  • take courses at SDU that are not pre-approved on your programme
  • take courses at other universities as part of your SDU programme

We recommend that you apply to your study board for pre-approval of courses (credits) well in advance of the course registration periods, which are 20-30 May for autumn courses and 20-30 November for spring courses.

Your application must include official course descriptions for the courses you want to get approved. As a minimum, each course description must state academic objectives, level, and weighting in ECTS, preferably also examination syllabus or literature list.

Contact the student counsellors at the Faculty of Science if you have any questions about the above deadlines and procedures.

Please expect a casework time of up to 8 weeks.

Apply for preapproval of courses (transfer of credits) via the system SPOC.

Once you have passed a course for which you have received preliminary credits, you must send any relevant documentation, e.g. a certificate/diploma, to SDU Education via the system SPOC.

It is important that the courses appearing from your certificate/diploma are identical with the courses for which you received preliminary credits. If SDU Education cannot recognise your courses, your credits will not be immediately granted, and you will be asked to prove that the courses which you have passed correspond to the courses for which you received preliminary credits.

If you have studied any courses abroad, please enclose a grading scale from your host university which states what grade is required to pass a course. However, credits for courses passed abroad will be transferred with the grade stated as Pass/Fail.

Apply for final credit transfer of preapproved courses via the system SPOC.

If you are applying for several types of credit transfer, you must send one application for each. For example, if you wish to apply for both starting credits and pre-approval of credit transfer, you must submit two application forms.

Casework time

When you submit an application to the Study Board, it can take up to two months before your application is processed. If you have not attached all the necessary documents and information, it may take longer to process your application.
When your application has been processed by the study board, you will receive a decision via your SDU e-mail.

You may be asked to submit additional documentation or a detailed explanation if the Study Board needs more information in order to process your application.
