What are childbirth grant portions?

Childbirth grant portion are extra SU grant portions. Fathers can apply for 6 childbirth grant portions, and expectant mother can apply for 12 childbirth grant portions. If you are adopting, you must contact the SU-Office for further guidance.

New rules regarding child grant portions apply from August 1, 2022.

In the new set of rules mothers and fathers can both apply for 9 child grant portions, as opposed to the current rules where mothers can apply for 12, and fathers can apply for 6 child grant portions.

Time of application, not the birthdate, determine whether your application falls under the new rules, or the old rules.

As an expectant mother you can apply 3 months before the expected month of birth, at the earliest. From August 1, 2022, applications for child grant portions must solely be made on minSU.

Childbirth grant portions

Since 1st of August 2022 the applications process for childbirth grant has been fully digitalized. Application are now made on MinSU.

With the new digital solution students are no longer required to upload documentation when they apply for birth support. The SU Agency automatically receives the necessary information from CPR.

Guidance can be found on the SU Agency’s webpage. (Danish only):

When you are receiving childbirth grant portions, you are not able to receive a supplement for providers at the same time.

Rules regarding the mutual exclusion of childbirth grant portions, and supplementary SU for provides can be found under conditions here.

If you are entitled to maternity/paternity benefits based on income from a (part-time) job (meaning that maternity/paternity benefits replace your income from your (part-time) job), you can combine them with your additional student grant (SU). This means that you can receive maternity/paternity benefits and SU at the same time.

If you are on maternity/paternity leave during a period when you are in a paid internship, and the maternity/paternity benefits replace the internship salary, you cannot receive SU and maternity/paternity benefits simultaneously, as the internship salary already excludes SU.

Please note that maternity/paternity benefits count towards the amount you are allowed to earn in addition to your SU (your annual income limit).
