Seminar in Business Economics

The seminar in Business Economics is and elective which gives you the opportunity to design and carry out an academic analysis of a problem. The problem can be a theoretical questions or it can be a problem in a company or another type of organization.

A seminar treating a theoretical problem may be in the form of a literature study. It can also include empirical material. This can be data that you collect while working on the seminar or secondary data found in data bases accessed through the library, at the company or from other sources.

You can choose between to types of seminar, 5 ECTS  and 10 ECTS. In the 10 ECTS, you must participate in a seminar process, to be able to participate in the examination. The seminar process contains four meetings in a writing group and a seminar meeting.  Read more about this in the course description and in the timetable.

Note that there are different demands to obligatory activities during the semester for 5 and 10 ECTS seminars.

Seminar in Business Economics is written in groups of 2-3 students. Begin by forming your group, then agree on which subject area and topic that you want to work with.

Students who have not found a group will be administratively assigned to a group, to the extent possible within the chosen area.

Before you start working on your seminar, you must decide on a subject.

As a group you hand in your wish for subject area. Furthermore within the subject area you must prioritize two topics. As an example, you may choose the subject area "Accounting" and the two topics "Activity Based Costing" and "Company Analysis".

Later in the process, you must, in collaboration with your supervisor, agree on a working title and a preliminary problem statement (see number 5).

You are allowed to work on a self-formulated topic. If you wish to do so, you write your topic on the form as one of the two topics, and your choice from the predefined topics as the second of your topics. If you want to work on a self-formulated topic, you must write 5-10 lines about the problem that you want to work with preferably including suggestion of theoretical framework and methods to be used in empirical work connected to the project. The better you can formulate your problem, the larger the chance of approval. Seek inspiration for how to formulate a topic in the predefined topics under each subject area.

Your wish for subject area and topics is handed in using the digital form:
5 ECTS seminar, please click here to access the digital form.
10 ECTS seminar, please click here to access the digital form.

Filling in the digital form:

  • The group must decide who creates the form. It is only the person creating the form who can later edit the form. Other group members receive an email about changes in the form and must approve these. If they do not do so, the form will not move on in the work flow.
  • The person creating the form needs email-addresses for other group members to fill in the form.
  • Notice that you at this stage can only fill in the fields for group members, indication of subject area and wished topic. You can fill in the remaining fields once you have received a supervisor and a topic.
  • Notice that the form is not submitted until you click on "send" (save is not enough). Notice also that once you have created the form (clicked on "save"), you can no longer add or remove group members. Therefore - do not fill in the form until you have formed your group. If you need to make changes in the group composition you may contact the study administration until the deadline for filling in the form.
  • If the form is rejected, you have to create a new form. You cannot edit in the form.

Deadline for registration of group, and wish for subject area and topic:

  • May 1st for seminars to be handed in in November (week 48).

Remember to register for the course as for any other course during the registration period.

Contact the assigned supervisor and agree on a working title and preliminary research question. After agreeing fill in the last part of the digital form and send it. After this your supervisor will formally validate your agreement.

Deadline for submitting the finalized supervisor agreement with your topic and working title for final approval is: October 1st  for seminars handed in in November (week 48).
