Active Enrollment Requirements and Maximum Period of Study

Active Enrollment Requirements refer to how many ECTS points you must have passed in order to stay enrolled. Maximum period of study refers to how much time you have to complete your degree programme.

Active Enrolment Requirement: 45 ECTS in an academic year

You must pass exams weighting a minimum of 45 ECTS in an academic year. If you do not comply with this requirement, the university will contact you by the end of the year with a warning that you must pass a minimum of 45 ECTS in the following academic year. If you fail to comply, you will be withdrawn from your programme.

Likewise, if you have passed less than 90 ECTS by the end of the 2nd year of study, you will receive a warning, that you must comply with the requirement within the following academic year. If you fail to comply, you will be withdrawn from your programme. You may, however, save up ECTS in order for you not to have to pass 45 ECTS the following academic year. For example, if you pass 60 ECTS in an academic year, you will only need to pass 30 ECTS the following year.

Active Enrolment Requirement: Pass at least one exam per year

You must pass at least one exam per year. This means that you, after your first year of study, at any given point in time must have passed at least one exam in the preceding year. If you have not, you will be withdrawn from your programme. The Study Start Test does not count as a passed exam.

This rule has become effective from September 2020. The first check will therefore be in September 2021.

Maximum Period of Study

There is a limit to how long you may take to complete your studies. This means that if you were enrolled on September 1st 2015 or later the following applies to you:

• in the Bachelor’s programme you may spend 1 additional year beyond the standard period of study (stipulated time), to complete your programme.
• in the Master’s programme you may spend an additional 6 months beyond the standard period of study (stipulated time), to complete your programme.

If you were admitted before September 1st 2015, special deadlines apply.

If things do not go according to plan

If, due to exceptional circumstances, you are not able to meet the Active Enrollment Requirements or  complete your programme within the maximum period of study, you may apply for exemption from the rule/rules.
