Right from when I started at TEK it was my dream to study abroad in the mountainous of the Canadian west. About 6 months before the exchange I started making preliminary investigations: which universities has SDU exchange agreements with, which university has the most interesting (and not least credit bearing) subjects, and how does it all work with applications at SDU and the host university?
I was lucky enough to be awarded the only available place at the University of Calgary but had to go through some frustrating administrative procedures before everything came together. It takes a lot of effort to get everything sorted out but it is worth the effort.
Mountains and awesome experiences in nature
When I arrived in Canada in July, I immediately started living out my dream of spending lots of time in the mountains. During the 6 months I was away I experienced temperatures from plus 30 degrees to minus 30 degrees during the winter. But when the sun shines 330 days a year in Calgary it is, of course, a fantastic experience. I've hiked, gone mountain-biking, climbed mountains and snowboarded in the most spectacular surroundings you can imagine.
New academic perspectives
Professionally, the exchange was very rewarding. As an Energy Technology student at SDU, the focus is very much on Denmark's transition to green energy so it was interesting to gain insight into a different energy system in a country where the approach to the need for renewable energy is different from in Denmark.
The University's teaching methods were different to TEK's with a mix of both large lectures and smaller class lecturing, depending on the subject. It was very motivating with clear information on grade-influencing elements such as assignments, tests and final exams.
All in all, I definitely think that it's a very positive experience to study abroad. You have some fantastic experiences in a different landscape and culture, improve your language skills, gain international experience, experience new professional approaches and make new friends and acquaintances from all over the world. Altogether, experiences and memories which will last a lifetime.
