Installation guide Endnote MAC - students

This guide is targeted SDU students.

Employees can install Endnote via the Software Center by following this guide

  1. Close all Office programs: Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, etc.
If you are new to EndNote, go to step 3.

****************************************************************************

If you have an earlier version of EndNote (X7or X8), this must be removed first. Note that previous preferences such as settings for Find Full Text, Journal Term lists, personal modified styles, etc.  will be lost, and must be configured again. Please follow from step 2.

*****************************************************************************

2. Find the obsolete EndNote version under your Applications and remove it to trash. This will not affect your library.

3. Open Blackboard --> myLEARN -->  Software.

4.  Scroll until you find Endnote, find the Mac version and click download.

5. Click to unzip the zip file you downloaded.

6. Double click to install EndNote X9 in the applications folder.

7. Click Open.

8. Click Install.

9. Follow the Endnote X9 Cutomizer, press Next, etc and at last Done. If  you still have Office programs open, you will be told to close them in order to fulfill the installation.

10. Now you can find EndNote among your programs. Drag it into your dock, so that you can start it quickly.

11. Open EndNote, and run any updates if required.

*****************************************************************************
Long time Endnote users can now open their previous Endnote Library. Remember to sync up to your EndnoteWeb account.

*****************************************************************************

12. When EndNote opens you will also see this box offering you to set up an EndNote account. This is a good idea in order for you to have a synchronized cloud based backup version of your library. Follow the wizard and remember your Endnote password. Once your library is synced, you can always login to your library at Myendnoteweb.com.

13. Endnote in Mac creates a library automatically for you, when installing the program. It is called My EndNote Library.enl, and it is placed in "Documents" together with a data-folder called My EndNote Library.Data

NOTE of advice!

    • Library and data-folder work as a pair, and must be placed together locally on your computer's hard disk.
Don't save the files on any shared services such as iCloud, Dropboc, OneDrive etc. as it may corrupt the library over time.
    • Don't place the library in the data-folder.
    • It is a good idea to rename both library and Data-folder to something personal, eg. Yourname.enl and Yourname.Data. It will make it easier to find and easier to share.

14. Open Word and check if you can see a new Endnote X9 tab. If you don't see the Endnote X9 tab, you can try the following:

    • Close word
    • Open EndNote X9
    • In the tab "EndNote X9", find and run the "Customizer-wizard"
    • Make sure that "Cite while you write" is selected, when you go through the customizer.
    • Open word again, and the EndNote X9 tab should now be visible.

15. If you have problems using Endnote, you may need to update your MAC’s OS system. Click the apple on the top left on your MAC --> select About this Mac --> click Software update.

Now you are ready to use Endnote; download or create references in your library, and use them in your papers and assignments. You can learn more from the official Endnote training guide, or take one of SDUB’s Endnote courses – see www.sdu.dk/libcourses.
