SDUs projektmodel i praksis og digitalt projektflow

17 maj

Lokale: BMB Seminarrum

Mark Maslin: Our Human Planet: co-evolution of human society and its environmental impact

18 maj

Guest lecture Meteorites, mega-volcanoes, plate tectonics and now human beings; the old forces of nature that transformed Earth many millions of years ago are joined by another: us. Our actions have driven Earth into a new geological epoch, the Anthropocene. For the first time in our home planet's 4.5-billion year history a single species is dictating Earth's future. To some the Anthropocene symbolises a future of superlative control of our environment. To others it is the height of hubris, the illusion of our mastery over nature. Whatever your view, just below the surface of this odd-sounding scientific word, the Anthropocene, is a heady mix of science, philosophy, religion and politics linked to our deepest fears and utopian visions. Prof. Mark Maslin traces the co-evolution of human society and its environmental impact revealing when and why humans began to dominate the Earth and shows us what the new epoch means for all of us. This lecture is part of the DIAS Minds Group. Read more here: https://www.sdu.dk/en/forskning/dias/research-projects/dias-minds-group About Mark Maslin Mark Maslin FRGS, FRSA is a Professor of Earth System Science at UCL. He is the Director of the London NERC Doctoral Training Partnership, a member of the Cheltenham Science Festival Advisory Board, a CSR Board member of Sopra-Steria, NetZeroNow and Sheep Included Ltd and a member of the Climate Crisis Advisory Group. Maslin is a leading scientist with particular interest in understanding the climate change and the major challenges facing humanity in the 21st century. He has published over 180 papers in journals such as Science, Nature, and The Lancet, with a current citation count according to Google Scholar over 23,000 (H=69 and i10 index=173) with 48 papers that have been cited over 100 times. He was the climatologist on the original 2009 The Lancet report on climate change and global health and is an author on the annual Lancet Countdown reports since 2015. He has received research and training funding of over £75m from government, charities, NGOs and the private sector. Mark has written 10 books and over 60 popular articles (e.g., for New Scientist, Independent, Guardian, Telegraph, New York Times and The Conversation – currently with over 3 million reads). He appears regularly on radio and television, including BBC One David Attenborough’s ‘Climate Change: the fact’. His books include ‘Climate Change: A Very Short Introduction’ (4th edition OUP, 2021), ‘The Cradle of Humanity’ (OUP, 2017 and 19), ‘The Human Planet’ co-authored with Simon Lewis (Penguin, 2018) and his latest book is ‘How to save our planet: the facts’ (Penguin, 2021). Mark also co-founded Rezatec Ltd in 2012, which employs 45 staff, and is now one of the world’s leading geospatial analytics company providing AI “big data” solutions to environmental issues for companies, NGOs, and local and national Governments. Professor Helen Hester: At Home in the Future: Domestic Labour and Speculative Architecture

18 maj

This talk considers mid-century efforts to challenge the organisation of domestic labour through spatial design, concentrating on two case studies – the bachelor pad and the fully automated future home. How are care and housework managed within these speculative visions? Who does it, under what conditions, and using which technologies? And what potential lessons do such spaces have to offer contemporary feminism? Whilst these historical examples may indeed offer us resources for thinking about how best to mitigate the challenges of reproductive labour via living arrangements, this talk will point also to their failures, and suggest that contesting these imaginaries (as much as learning from them) is likely to prove necessary in building a meaningfully feminist conception of anti-work architecture.

Dansk Historikerdag

19 maj

IN LOVE WITH ENGLISH

25 maj

– a symposium on and around Romeo & Juliet A day in loving recognition of the contribution of Associate Professor Claus Schatz-Jakobsen to the study (and love) of English at SDU English Studies and the Center for Uses of Literature invite you to join us in a celebration of English as a language and a subject of study at SDU. Our theme is love in a time of corona and warfare. Our common reference is Shakespeare’s immortal play, Romeo & Juliet, which Odense Theatre stages this season, and which a large group of English students will watch later in the day by courtesy of the Faculty of the Humanities study restart funding. The programme features the actors who play Romeo and Juliet, who will give samples of their acting and talk about these most iconic roles. World-leading Shakespeare scholars and editors, Gordon McMullan and Anne Sophie Haar Refskou, will ask what love actually meant in Shakespeare’s time and why it’s crucial to know love’s history. SDU English Associate Professor Anita Wohlmann will discuss West Side Story as an adaptation of Shakespeare while SDU English Associate Professor Cindie A. Aaen Maagaard invites us to a reflection on her love of the language she also does research in and on. Programme - Room O100 13:00 – 13:15 “Love at first sight; or, why are we here?” by Professor and Director of English Studies, SDU, Peter Simonsen 13:15 – 13:45 samples from Odense Theatre’s production of Romeo & Juliet by actors, Kristoffer Helmuth (Romeo) og Lea Bastrup Rønne (Julie) (in Danish) 13:45 – 14:30 “Love and other problems in Romeo and Juliet” by Dr Anne Sophie Haar Refskou, Department of Comparative Literature, Aarhus University and Professor Gordon McMullan, Department of English, King’s College London, AIAS-COFUND Fellow, Aarhus Institute of Advanced Studies, Aarhus University, and editor of the Norton Critical Edition of Romeo and Juliet 14:30 – 15:00 Coffee break 15:00 – 15:30 “In Love with Shakespeare Adaptations: West Side Stories” by Associate Professor Anita Wohlmann, Department of English, SDU 15:30 – 16:00 “Falling in love again and again: An unfinished story about a life with English” by Associate Professor Cindie A. Kaare Christensen: Why do we age so differently?

1 jun

DIAS lecture Abstract Over the last many generations, there has been remarkable progress in human lifespan and health. However, these trends overlook great variability in the aging process within generations. What drives these differences across and within generations? What are the roles of socioeconomic conditions, environmental factors, genetics, family environment, and chance? This talk will summarize insights obtained from a series of Danish studies of twins, the very old, and longevity-enriched families. About Kaare Christensen Professor Kaare Christensen, MD, PhD, DMSc, is the Head of Research at the unit for Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Biodemography (EBB) at the Department of Public Health at SDU. Professor Kaare Christensen is a medical doctor (1987). He has a PhD degree (1994) from Odense University and a Doctor of Medical Sciences degree (1999) from University of Southern Denmark. He has, for more than a decade, been Director of both the Danish Twin Registry and The Danish Aging Research Center and has acted as co-PI for the US NIH-funded research program Long Life Family Study. This lecture will be held at O-DIAS Seminarrum and can be viewed on our Youtube channel the following week

Corona Time: Reading Novels During the Covid 19 Pandemic

7 jun

This paper is the result of study that began in the summer of 2020, into the habits of novel readers under lockdown in Denmark and the UK. Our report builds on 800 surveys and sixty extensive interviews in the two national contexts, suggesting that the consumption of novels, both in paper and audio form, played a critical part in the way many readers experienced the pandemic. While we began the study in the spirit of many journalists reporting on the upsurge in book sales in Spring 2020, by imagining people seizing the time they had been waiting for to read Proust or Joyce, we have ended up reaching a somewhat more complicated set of conclusions. Although some of the readers we spoke to do fall into this category, of being people who had more time to read under lockdown, most describe more complicated engagements with narrative that reflected the unique moment in history in which they were accessing books. This paper stresses the way temporal co-ordinates matter – both to the way readers interpret and respond to books – and as a dimension in which the effects of novel reading make themselves felt. By Professor Tina Lupton and Postdoc Johanne Gormsen Schmidt, University of Copenhagen The event is chaired by Professor Rita Felski and organized by the Center for Uses of Literature

Huimin Zhao: Directed Evolution for Fun and Profit

8 jun

GUEST LECTURE Abstract By mimicking the Darwinian evolution in the test tube, directed evolution has become a powerful and indispensable tool for the design and engineering of biological systems including proteins, pathways, and genomes for fundamental research and biotechnological applications. In this talk, I will give a historical account of the directed evolution field and discuss the challenges and opportunities in directed evolution. I will highlight our recent work on the development and application of novel directed evolution tools for pathway engineering and genome engineering. In addition, I will introduce a new directed evolution strategy that combines machine learning and automation for biosystems design. ABOUT HUIMIN ZHAO Dr. Huimin Zhao is the Steven L. Miller Chair of chemical and biomolecular engineering, and professor of chemistry, biochemistry, biophysics, and bioengineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). He received his B.S. degree in Biology from the University of Science and Technology of China in 1992 and his Ph.D. degree in Chemistry from the California Institute of Technology in 1998 under the guidance of Nobel Laureate Dr. Frances Arnold. Prior to joining UIUC in 2000, he was a project leader at the Industrial Biotechnology Laboratory of the Dow Chemical Company. He was promoted to full professor in 2008. Dr. Zhao has authored and co-authored over 330 research articles and over 25 issued and pending patent applications with several being licensed by industry. In addition, he has given over 400 plenary, keynote, or invited lectures. Twenty-five (25) of his former graduate students and postdocs are pursuing academic careers.

Pieter Vanhuysse: Do European Societies Tax Their Own Reproduction?

22 jun

DIAS Lecture Abstract What are the intergenerational resource transfer burdens over the working life of parents compared to non-parents in Europe? We use National Transfer and National Time Transfer Accounts to comprehensively estimate these burdens for twelve European Union member states around 2010. Going beyond public transfers, we also value two statistically less visible transfer types in the family realm: of market goods (money) and of unpaid household labor (time). The transfer packages of parents and non-parents differ radically. Non-parents contribute almost exclusively to public transfers. But parents, and only parents, additionally provide still larger familial transfers: mothers mainly time, fathers mainly money. Estimating resource transfer stocks over the working life, we find that the average parental/non-parental contribution ratio flips from 0.73 (public transfers alone) to 2.66 (all three transfers together). The implicit tax rates de facto imposed thereby on rearing children are multiples of the value-added tax rates in place on consumption goods. Especially in view of low rates of fertility and rising rates of intentional childlessness on an aging continent, the magnitude of these asymmetric transfer burdens carries multiple implications for sociological and policy debates. For instance, it raises the question whether European societies stealthily tax their own reproduction too heavily About Pieter Vanhuysse PhD (LSE) Professor Pieter Vanhuysse is a Full Professor at the Department of Political Science and Public Management and the Danish Centre for Welfare Studies (DaWS) at SDU. He is also founding Board Member of the Interdisciplinary Centre on Population Dynamics at the Faculty of Business and Social Sciences (CPOP-SAMF). He holds degrees from the University of Leuven (MA in economics; Certificate in philosophy) and the London School of Economics (MSc and PhD in government). Prior to joining SDU, he was Deputy Director and Director of Research at the European Centre for Social Welfare Policy and Research, a United Nations-affiliated thinktank in Vienna. This lecture takes place at DIAS seminaroom

Bæredygtighedsakademiet 2022 – hvordan kan vi sammen skabe fremtidens bæredygtige by?

28 jun

Tilmelding åbner for ansøgninger d. 15. april 2022. Læs mere her

Teaching for Active Learning

8 nov

Dette år vil konferencen have særligt fokus på: Developing student and graduate competences for the 21st Century – ways in which universities facilitate students in developing their competences for lifewide and lifelong learning.
