How cookies are used

What is cookies?

Cookies are small text files, which enhance the user experience on a web site by allowing the system to recognise returning visitors, etc. Cookies are sent back and forth between your browser and a web server and contain information about e.g.:

  • user preferences
  • if a user is logged in
  • how the website is used.

A cookie is a passive file and can not spread computer viruses or other malicious programs. Often cookies help analyze how the website is used, and the web editor can improve the user experience. In several cases, cookies may be necessary to provide a service. Cookies are mostly erased automatically from the browser when it is closed (so-called session cookies). Cookies can also be set with an expiration time so that data exists for a shorter or longer period (persistent cookies). Persistent cookies are usually stored on the hard disk. Moreover distinction is usually drawn between first-party cookies and third party cookies. First-party cookies are set by the page the user is visiting. Third-party cookies are set by a third party that has elements embedded on the page the user visits. Third-party cookies are set among other by web analytics programs.

Cookie from Google Analytics
On sdu.dk we use Google Analytics to analyse how users use the website. The information the cookie collects about your use (traffic data, including your IP address) is transmitted to and stored on Google servers in the U.S.. Google uses this information to evaluate your use of the website, compiling reports on website activity and providing other services relating to website activity and internet usage. Google may also transfer this information to third parties if required by law or if third parties process the information on Google's behalf. Google Analytics sets two types of cookies: A persistent cookie to indicate if the user is returning, where the user comes from, what search engine the user has used, keywords, etc. Session cookies are used to show when and for how long a user is on the website. Session cookies expire after each session, i.e. when you close your tab or browser. Google will not associate your IP address with any other data and information held by Google.
